I haven’t had much time to have a good look at the new version of WordPress. It is that time of the year when there is always work to be done both inside and outside the house. I really am behind in my outside work - I hooked up one fountain in my backyard last evening but I still have the Gardening Girl fountain to hook up. I finally got around to upgrading my 3 WordPress scripts to the new version - 2.5.1. I did the practice blog on my computer first - I have ‘Appache Friends - XAMPP’ on my computer. I install any php scripts on my computer first and play around with them before I upload the script to my web server. I didn’t have any problem upgrading this script - I had to look for a few things but I think I will eventually get used to where everything is. The Widget page is certainly a little different - I think I like the drag and drop method from the previous versions better but I shall see.

I then upgraded my main blog and everything went well - all of the plugins that I use in this blog seem to work with the new version. The script also works with the Talian theme. The final WP script I upgraded was one that I have been working with  on another domain name - I have been playing around with using WordPress as a Content Management System. The upgrade went fairly smooth - the biggest problem I had was getting the WPG2 (WordPress Gallery 2) plugin to work properly. It didn’t take me long to fix the problem and all is well again I think.

I am always glad when I get my php scripts upgraded  and working properly. I don’t usually have a big problem but one never knows. I always backup my database  and my files just in case something goes wrong. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Now that I have the newest version of WordPress up and running - I can take a longer look at it and see if there is a big difference.

I am almost finished reading the book - WordPress For Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. It has been a worthwhile read - I now understand WordPress a lot better than I did even though I have been using WordPress for my blogging software for over a year now. The section on templates was most helpful and I have a good idea of setting up a web site using static pages, writing my own templates. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about WordPress.

I continue to work away at learning more about WordPress and designing a web site for my computer friend. Tom is interested in having a calendar on the web site - one that various groups in the community can add their events to so all can view them.

While searching for such a calendar, I came across Easy PHP Calendar. I am quite enthused about this calendar and it’s features. I visited the web site’s forum and saw a post on ‘Integrating the calendar into a WordPress Page’. I was able to follow the thread and use the various suggestions/instructions that forum members had posted. I did get some php errors along the way but I was able to sort them out.

During this time - I learned how to do a page template for what I wanted and then how to assign the ‘Calendar Page’ (that I created) to use this template. I found this information in the WordPress for Dummies book. I was rather proud of myself when I got this accomplished - it took me a bit of time to figure it out but I was successful in the end. I am also learning some php along the way although I have a long way to go before I can say I have a working knowledge of php.
